Mal Pope Spills the Beans on his musical Cappuccino Girls

A new musical has appeared in Swansea its name Cappuccino Girls.  It even appears in its own theatre, The Evening Post Theatre on Swansea's High Street is where the show staged Wednesday to Sunday.
The musical is based around three ladies which meet in the same coffee shop every day but who all have very different personalities. Even Welsh superstar Catherine Zeta- Jones is planning on seeing this unique musical.
Written by Swansea songwriter Mal Pope, who I was lucky enough to pose a few questions to. Here are the questions I asked and his responses.

What inspired you to write the musical?!
It actually started as a 3 minute song about my wife and her mates meeting every day for coffee in Mumbles!

The show has received great reviews from CityLife and Visit Wales, Were you surprised at the great reception?
You hope, you dream but the reaction has been better then that.

Do you have any major plans for your musical?
We hope to run for as long as possible in Swansea and bring people to the city to see the show and hopefully it'll help to take it to other cities.

So lets get to know Mal Pope, a question everyone hates to answer, What is your favourite musical?
I like the old ones like Oliver and The Sound of Music.

What got you into musicals and musical theatre?
Believe it or not, I got into musicals by default. I'm originally a song writer but I wanted to do something which reflected Welsh culture so the first musical I wrote a musical based on the events of the 1904 religious revival called Amazing Grace. The show ended with being a sell out for the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff.

In your opinion do you feel like musicals are a dying breed?
Like everything, they need to reinvent themselves. For example I love what they did with Mamma Mia!

Do you think programmes such as Glee and Smash have helped to revive the musical?
Yes I think Glee has helped kids see musicals and musical theatre as being cool.

Mal Pope - Writer of Cappuccino Girls
I feel like this budding songwriter/musical writer may become Swansea's answer to Andrew Lloyd Webber.
I wish him all the best with Cappuccino Girls and any other projects that he may have in the pipeline.

If you're interested in seeing Cappuccino Girls it will be shown in The Evening Post Theatre until the 20th May. Click here for links to buying tickets.
